Mitarashi dango is said to be named after the bubbles of the mitarashi (御手洗) (purifying water placed at the entrance of a shrine) of the Shimogamo shrine nearby. Les mitarashi dango sont supposées être nommées en références aux bulles du 御手洗団子 (mitarashi?) (l'eau purificatrice disponible à l'entrée d'un temple) du sanctuaire Shimogamo à proximité de l'établissement.
